Away jersey Copa Nottingham Forest 1979/80

The unranked format of the old European Cup competition brought about many oddities, such as
Nottingham Forest facing a tougher opponent in the premier round (the competition holder Liverpool) of their successful 1978-79 campaign than the final ( Suède champions Malmö).
Of course, Forest were themselves unexpected finalists in what was the club's first ever appearance in Europe's biggest clubs competition.
It was a team that had grown in stature as the
tournament progressed and the team went into the Munich final as heavy favourites. Although missing Martin O'Neill injured and Archie Gemmill dropped out, Forest had the luxury of presenting the premier
million pound British footballer to his team for the match. Trevor Francis arrived at the City Ground three
months earlier and only became eligible for the final under UEFA rules.
The considerable cost of his acquisition seemed money well spent when, just before half time, he
intelligently headed home a John Robertson cross for what would be the game's only goal. The Swedish
team was undermanned and offered little menace to Forest, who missed several opportunities in the second half to
close out the game, including from Gary Birtles, who still finished the campaign as
champion 's top scorer with 6 goals.
