Longtime coach Jean Vincent delivered a third and final Ligue 1 triumph for Nantes this season with his stylish team easily sweeping all national opposition. The Breton club boasted the meanest defense and most prolific attack over the course of the season and finished 10 points ahead of second place Bordeaux.
The star of the team was undoubtedly Yugoslavian striker Vahid Halilhodžic who scored 27 goals in 36 appearances to finish as Ligue 1 's top scorer in his second season at La Beaujoire. French international midfielder José Touré scored 13 goals from midfield and the club's legendary wide players, Loïc Amisse and Bruno Baronchelli, were as influential in this league success as they were in the 1980 victory. At the other end of the field, the ever-reliable and omnipresent goalkeeper Jean-Paul Bertrand Demanes kept opponents at bay, ably assisted by William Ayache, Patrice Rio and promising central defender Thierry Tusseau, yet another quality player to emerge from the ranks of Nantes' youth.
