New coach Marcel Tomazover has taken charge of an Etoile Rouge side in the middle of a seven-season Ligue 1 run. The team he inherited had finished the 1969-70 campaign in 13th place and he hoped to improve their fortunes with a busy summer on the transfer market, with international midfielder Yves Herbert leaving after just one season in the capital and striker Jacky Vergnes after two years. To replace them, Etoile Rouge brought in Jacques Simon, a France midfielder in the 1966 World Cup, and Walter Ferreira, a Portuguese travelling companion, but the newcomers failed to lift a Red Star team that spent the 1970-71 season battling against relegation before finishing in 15th place.
