Home jersey Zaire World Cup 1974

Zaire's qualification for the 1974 World Cup was a surprise, as the rest of the world was unaware that the African nation was experiencing the most successful period in its history. African champions in 1968 when the country was still known as DR Congo, the success was repeated in 1974 with a replay of a victory over Zambia and nine goals from the tournament's top scorer, Mulamba Ndaye. Zaire's campaign in West Germany proved disastrous for a variety of reasons. All three group matches were lost and the 9-0 defeat to Yugoslavia was particularly humiliating for Zaire coach Zoran Vidinic. Few people at the time appreciated the pressure that Zaire's players were under because of threats and intimidation from Mobutu, the country's dictatorial leader.
