Switzerland had the honour of hosting the tournament in 1954, hoping to reach at least the quarter-final stage it had reached in 1934 and 1938. The goal was achieved, but not necessarily in the way they might have expected. After making good progress in the group stage, Switzerland faced Austria in the quarter-finals. Josef Hügi scored a hat-trick and Robert Ballaman scored a double, but those five goals were still not enough to stop the Austrians from advancing with a 7-5 victory. It remains the most memorable match in World Cup history to date.
