In 1982, just four seasons after being elected to the Football League, Wigan Athletic won promotion from the fourth to the third division for the first time ever. Former European Cup-winning defender Larry Lloyd had arrived as player manager a few months before the end of the previous season, and his impact was fully felt during the 1981-82 campaign, which resulted in a fine third place finish. Veteran striker Les Bradd's 19 goals helped promote the club and he also scored in Chelsea's famous 4-2 League Cup defeat earlier in the campaign.
