The 1970s was a decade of ups and downs for Real Betis. The club reached the heights of fifth place in La Liga, the Copa del Rey in 1977 and a European run that saw them knock out AC Milan, but they also suffered several relegations during the same period. Emerging players such as Javier Lopez, Antonio Benitez and Francisco Bizcocho formed the backbone of the club for most of the decade and its most successful and longest-serving coaches were Rafael Iriondo and the Hungarian Ferenc Szusza.
