In the early 1970s, FC Porto was a club ready to emerge from the shadow of Lisbon's giants. The breakthrough had not come in the previous decade, with the club finishing six times in the Primeira League, but the new decade had begun with a misstep, Porto finishing in 9th place in 1970, the worst finish in its history. The club bounced back and led Benfica to victory the following season, but under new coach Paulo Amaral, the 1971-72 season did not bring the progress hoped for: Notable players at FC Porto at the time included young midfielder Rodolfo Reis, striker Lemos, and former Benfica striker Abel Miglietti, and the club was beginning to build a strong reputation for developing young talent, a policy that would bring it much success in the years to come.
