The mid-90s were a tricky time for Watford as they sought to regain their place in the top flight they had so enjoyed over the previous decade. Championship campaigns under Steve Perryman and Glenn Roeder generally ended with below-average results in the Second Division, as the club tried to cope with the loss of influential players such as David James, Paul Furlong and Bruce Dyer to clubs Premier League. The 1994-95 season was more upbeat, with goals from new recruits Craig Ramage, Tommy Mooney and Kevin Phillips helping the club finish just outside the play-off place, despite being favourites for relegation at the start of the season.
