The 1984-85 season was one of change for Benfica. New manager Tomislav Ivic left the club at the start of the campaign and was replaced by Pal Csernai. New recruits Jorge Silva, Wando and Adelino Nunes arrived to replace the departures of Fernando Chalana and Glenn Stromberg. These changes affected the Lisbon giants' momentum and prevented them from winning a third consecutive Primeira Divisao title. The 19th edition of the Taca de Portugal and the 3-1 victory over FC Porto in the final gave them some respite. The hero of the match was Danish striker Michael Manniche, who became a menace for the club, having scored 28 goals in all competitions. He was supported by veterans Nene and Carlos Manuel, who both scored double-digit goals.
