The 1972-73 season saw FC Sochaux-Montbeliard discover European soccer for the first time, thanks to their third-place finish in Ligue 1 the previous season. Unfortunately, the visitors rallied and scored three times to take a commanding lead into the second leg. André Perrin scored a late goal at Danemark for Sochaux, but it was only a consolation as Frem had already scored twice to increase their overall lead.On the domestic front, Paul Barrett's team failed to reach the heights of the previous season and Sochaux finished their Ligue 1 campaign in 11th place.
