The 1985-86 campaign saw the arrival of a new coach at Benfica, Englishman John Mortimore, and a determined bid to reclaim the title from Porto. Leading the standings for most of the season, a 2-1 defeat on the penultimate day of the championship to Sporting Clube allowed Porto to leapfrog the Eagles and claim the title. Benfica retained the Taca de Portugal by beating neighbors Belenenses in the final. The increasingly prolific Danish striker Michael Manniche was the main source of goals for Benfica, although new recruit Portuguese international striker Rui Aguas came close. Manuel Bento, Carlos Manuel and Minervino Pietra all made significant contributions during the campaign, while veteran Nene enjoyed his final season at the club.
