Playing as Betis Balompié, with royal patronage rescinded until the end of the Spanish Civil War, the 1934-35 season was historic for the club as they won their only La Liga title. The team was coached by Irishman Patrick O'Connell and their star player was Spanish international Simón Lecue, an attacking midfielder who scored 9 goals in 21 games in that winning season. The championship was won through resolute defending and was finally won in dramatic fashion on 28 April 1935 with a crushing 5-0 victory over Racing Santander.
