Portugal experienced another international disappointment when they finished second in their qualifying group for the 1972 European Championships, behind Belgium. While the finals were being held in Europe, Portugal flew to South America to take part in the Independence Cup, a tournament to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Brazil's Declaration of Independence. With a squad that included the likes of Eusebio, Jaime Graca, Jose Henrique, Humberto Coelho, Rui Jordao and Toni, Portugal qualified for the first group stage by winning all their matches against Ecuador, Iran, Chile and the Republic of Ireland. The second group stage also ended with wins over Argentina and the Soviet Union, and a draw against Uruguay ensured that the Portuguese qualified for the final against the hosts. In the 89th minute, thanks to a Jairzinho goal, a tight match was decided in favour of Brazil, but despite a late disappointment, this tournament represented Portugal's best international performance since the 1966 World Cup.
