FC Nantes was founded in April 1943 thanks to the cooperation of several Nantes football clubs, including Saint-Pierre de Nantes, the city's main amateur club. It became a professional club in 1945 when it moved up to the national second division. It played there for about twenty years before joining the French first division championship. Under the wing of José Arribas, the club shone by winning the championship in 1965 and 1966, demonstrating a style of play that left its mark on the world. Thanks to their lively and highly technical game, their consistency and a well-stocked squad, the Cannaris, as they are known, were at the forefront of the scene during the years that followed under Jean Vincent, then Jean-Claude Suaudeau and Raynald Denoueix.

Adulated by sports journalists and fans alike, the Nantes style of play led FC Nantes, renamed FC Nantes Atlantique between 1992 and 2007, to achieve a number of successes, including eight French league titles between 1965 and 2001, plus three French cup titles in 19979, 1999 and 2000. Its achievements in the French championship make it the third most successful club behind AS Saint-Etienne (10 titles), Olympique de Marseille (9 titles), tied with AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain and ahead of Olympique Lyonnais (7 titles).

Although it has not been able to make a name for itself on the continental stage, with just one elimination in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 1996 and in the quarter-finals of the Europa League in 1995, the team has retained its reputation for its quality of play, both collectively and individually. It has notably counted in its ranks the great names of French football such as Didier Deschamps, Eric Carrière, Christian Karembeu, Claude Makélélé, Marcel Dessailly, Vahid Halilhodzic and Mickael Landreau. Occupying the Stade de la Beaujoire since 1984, it has a strong rivalry with a number of big-name clubs, including Stade Rennais and EA Guingamp. In 2012, the club opened up to new horizons by creating its women's section, which currently occupies a good place in the women's D2.
