FC Nantes, a historic club
Foundedin April 1943 through cooperation between several clubs soccer clubs in Nantes, including Saint-Pierre de Nantes , the city's main amateur club, FC Nantes achieved professional status in 1945 when it moved up to the second division of the national championship. The club played in this league for some twenty years, before moving up to the France first division. Under the wing of José Arribas, the club went on to win the championship in 1965 and 1966, demonstrating a style of play that left a lasting impression. Adulated by sports journalists and fans alike, theNantes style of play saw FC Nantes, renamed FC Nantes Atlantique between 1992 and 2007, achieve a number of feats, including eight league titles France between 1965 and 2001, plus three France cup titles in 19979, 1999 and 2000. His achievements in the France championships make him the third most successful player behindAS Saint-Etienne (10 titles),Olympique de Marseille (9 titles), tied withAS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, and ahead ofOlympique Lyonnais (7 titles).
Although continental failed to make a name for itself, reaching the semi-finals of the Ligue des Champions in 1996 and the quarter-finals of theDollarspa Leaguein 1995, the team's reputation for the quality of its play, both collectively and individually, remains intact. Its ranks have included some of the biggest names in French soccer, such as Didier Deschamps, Eric Carrière, Christian Karembeu, Claude Makélélé, Marcel Dessailly, Vahid Halilhodzic and Mickael Landreau. Occupying the Stade de la Beaujoire since 1984, the club has maintained a close rivalry with a number of well-known clubs clubs, including Stade Rennais andEA Guingamp.
