Unione Calcio Sampdoria, a big name in Italian football

Founded on 12 August 1946 following the merger of SGC Sampierdarenese, a team created in 1899, and SG Andrea Doria, founded in 1895, Sampdoria is an Italian football club based in Genoa, Liguria, and has been playing in Serie A since the 2011-2012 play-offs. They have a strong rivalry with Genoa, another team from the city, and wear the blue, white, red and black colours. Having seen a number of great footballers pass through their ranks, including Roberto Mancini (the player who has played the most games for the club with 567 and the top scorer with 173 goals), Marcello Lippi and Clarence Seedorf, Doria enjoyed their glory years from the mid-1980s until the mid-1990s.

The team's highly effective play, coupled with the Roberto Mancini-Gianluca Vialli duo, led to the team winning its first Italian Championship and four Italian Cups during this period. While they enjoyed a fair amount of success at domestic level, this was not really the case at continental level, with just one victory in the 1990 Cup Winners' Cup and a final loss to Barcelona in the 1992 Champions Cup. Their glory days came to an end after winning the Italian Football Cup in 1994, the last title the club won. However, they remain one of the best teams in Italy thanks to a strong squad and good coaching.
