A look back at the Real Sociedad club
Founded in 1909, Real Sociedad SAD is a Spanish football club based in the Basque Country, formerly the football section of the omnisport club of the same name. The team plays at the Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian, with a capacity of 40,000. Nicknamed La Real, the colours worn by Real Sociedad are blue and white. The club has a rivalry with its Basque neighbour Athletic Bilbao.
It was also in 1909 that the club began its participation in the King's Cup, with a first victory against the Spanish of Madrid with a score of 3-1. In 1929 the team entered La Liga, currently LaLiga Santander, and managed to reach 4th place with Paco Bienzobas, the season's top scorer. The team qualified for the European Cup for the first time in 1975. In 1983, they were semi-finalists in the Champions Cup. More recently, in 2002, the club managed to reach the top of the league but was overtaken by Real Madrid towards the end of the season and finished second. In 2020, they played in the King's Cup final and won 1-0 against their rivals Athletic Club Bilbao.
The Basque club has won two Spanish Championships in 1981 and 1982. They have also won 3 Spanish Cups in 1909, 1987 and 2020. The club's domestic record is completed by a victory in the Spanish Supercup in 1982. In La Liga, Real Sociedad set a record of 38 games without defeat in 1978 and 1979. A record broken by the famous Spanish club: FC Barcelona in 2017.
Among the club's iconic players are Mikel Arteta, Antoine Griezmann, Carlos Vela, Xabi Alonso, Claudio Bravo. The current squad includes famous footballers such as David Silva, Oyarzabal, Illaramendi, Nacho Monreal.
