The transition to the 1990s was a welcome new start for TSV 1860 Munich after the struggles of the previous decade. After several near misses, the summer of 1990 saw the club establish the structures that would enable it to dominate the Oberliga Bayern the following season and return to the 2. Bundesliga after nine years away.

Karsten Wettberg arrived as coach, and new players like Rainer Berg and Florian Hinterberger contributed to a league season of 32 matches unbeaten, followed by a play-off of 6 matches also unbeaten, sealing the promotion in style.
