The early years of the 1970s were a challenging time for BSC Young Boys as the club sought to re-establish itself among the Swiss elite. The 1969-70 season brought a respectable fifth place with vibrant performances at home, securing high-scoring victories against FC Wettingen, Servette, and Bellinzona, despite significant turnover of coaches and players.

The only foreign player in the club, veteran West German striker Albert Brülls, left in the summer of 1970, but a positive point was the early emergence of young goalkeeper Walter Eichenberger, who would become an important and long-serving player for YB.
