Determined to do better than the 1974 runners-up, the Dutch qualified comfortably for the 1978 tournament ahead of Belgium and travelled to Argentina with confidence, but their form was slow to build and their first-round qualification was unusually difficult after a draw with Peru and a defeat to Scotland. But everything fell into place in the second group stage as Rob Rensenbrink and Johnny Rep began scoring at will to propel the Dutch into the final with wins over Austria and Italy and a draw with West Germany, but the final was unfortunately repeated four years earlier with an extra-time defeat to the hosts despite a fine 120-minute performance.
