A slow start to Samp's 1979-80 Serie B season cost coach Lamberto Giorgis his job after only seven rounds of the championship.
He was replaced by Lauro Toneatto who stabilized the club's fortune and brought a team consisting of reliable goalkeeper Claudio Garella, attacking midfielder Maurizio Orlando and 9-goal striker Giovanni Sartori back to the promotion places.
Unfortunately, Toneatto's team could not reach more than the seventh position, which left them four points out of the promotion places.
