Under coach Raymond Goethals, the Belgian national team began the decade at the World Cup in Mexico, its first appearance at a major tournament since 1954. However, the team was eliminated in the group stage with only one victory against El Salvador was the best possible. The same team set up at the 1972 Nations Cup would bring a more positive result. Paul Van Himst, Raoul Lambert, Jan Verheyen and Erwin Vandendaele all played an important role as the Belgians narrowly lost to West Germany in the semi-final before beating Hungary in the third place match. Qualification for the 1974 World Cup was narrowly missed on goal difference.
