France's first "golden generation" appeared in the early post-war years and reached its peak at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. With a brilliant forward line with playmaker Raymond Kopa, winger Jean Vincent and Just Fontaine at the centre forward, France played a deliciously fluid and flawless football. The absence of key defender Robert Jonquet played a role in the top-level encounter between the French and Brazil, who finally defeated them 5-2 in the semi-finals. Their tournament ended on a positive note as third place was secured in style with a crushing 6-2 victory over West Germany. Fontaine scored four times in that game to bring his goal total for the tournament to 13, a record that stands to this day.
