After a strong qualifying campaign, Portugal narrowly finished ahead of the Soviet Union to reach the final phase of the 1984 European Championship, their first appearance in a major international tournament since 1966. Once in the competition, the players quickly proved they were going to make their mark on the tournament.

A winning goal from Nené in the 81st minute against Romania, in the last match of Group 2, allowed Portugal to qualify unbeaten for the semi-finals. The Portuguese faced France in an epic match, narrowly won 3-2 by the host nation thanks to a late extra-time goal. Winger Fernando Chalana and defender João Pinto were the standout players for Portugal and were both elected to the Team of the Tournament.
