Experienced players like Puck van Heel, Wim Anderiesen, and Leen Vente led the way, but it was the emergence of striker Johanes “Kick” Smit that truly enhanced the reputation of Dutch football. He scored during the narrow 3-2 defeat against Switzerland that ended the Netherlands' run in the tournament, and he continued to maintain an average of one goal per match throughout the rest of his illustrious international career.
