The huge impact Algeria made on the 1982 World Cup was all the more remarkable given that the country had only officially established a national team two decades earlier for independence from France. When the North Africans appeared in Spain, most of the rest of the world was unaware of their recent achievements, including their first appearance in an African Cup of Nations final two years earlier. While a team that included the likes of Lakhdar Belloumi and Rabah Madjer was never going to be an easy opponent, the 2-1 group stage victory over the mighty West Germany was still a huge shock to the world game. Unfortunately, the format of the competition and the poor sportsmanship of West Germany and Austria prevented Algeria from progressing further in the tournament. However, 1982 will go down in history as their first - and best - World Cup.
