The second half of the 1970s had established Club Brugge as a major force in both national and international football, but by the early 1980s, this incredible cycle of success was over and a difficult transition was taking place.
The departure of experienced veterans Vandereycken, Bastijns, and Meeuws before the start of the 1981-82 season left a void, and during a campaign marked by numerous coaching changes, the club experienced its worst finish in the top division in 30 years, ending the season with only one point above the relegation zone.
