Jupp Heynckes took over from Udo Lattek as coach in 1987 and enjoyed his first success in Bundesliga during the 1988-89 season with a strong team that boasted both the best defence and the best attack in the division.

It was a completely revamped team after the influential departures of Brehme and Matthäus in the summer. A great recruitment campaign brought in Erland Johnsen, Johnny Ekström, Olaf Thon, and Stefan Reuter, while established players Roland Wohlfarth and Jürgen Wegmann provided the goals that supported the club's eleventh success.
