Founded in 1898 and joining the Swiss Football Association two years later, BSC Young Boys quickly dived into competitive action for the 1900-01 League season. The newcomers kicked off their West group of the regional second division in style, winning 7 of their 8 matches and scoring 39 goals along the way. This allowed the Young Boys to play a play-off against Fortuna Basel for the Serie B title and, although the match was narrowly lost 3-2, promotion to Serie A was secured. After just one season, the club was already beginning to overshadow FC Bern as the main football club in the city.
