The year 1971 marks an iconic period in the history of Club Nacional de Football. The brilliant team led by Washington Etchamendi won every competition they entered: their first victory in Copa Libertadores against the three-time champions Estudiantes de la Plata, the conquest of the Uruguayan championship, and a win in the Intercontinental Cup against Panathinaikos.

In 1972, Nacional completed the cycle by winning the Inter-American Cup against Cruz Azul from Mexico and securing the Uruguayan championship for the fourth consecutive year (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972). The team consisted of extremely talented players and legendary names such as Luis Ubina, Manga, Luis Cubilla, Victor Esparrago, Julio César Morales, Julio Montero Castillo, and the prolific Argentine striker Luis Artime.
