The 1980s were a significant period for FC St.Gallen 1879. Under the guidance of their influential coach Helmuth Johannsen, the 1983-84 season brought European football to the club for only the second time in its history. The goals from the attacking trio of Martin Gisinger, Paul Friberg, and Manfred Braschler made St.Gallen an exciting team to watch and practically unbeatable at their home ground, the Espenmoos.
