Relive the history of European football with the Panathinaikos 1971 Retro shirt from Copa Football, a symbol of the Greek team’s success!
Today, we know Panathinaikos as the most successful team in Greece in European club football, but no one expected the miraculous campaign in the European Cup that saw the Greens reach the final in the 1970-71 season.
No Greek club had ever reached the quarter-finals of a European competition before, but this memorable campaign and the prolific goals from Antonis Antoniadis saw them overcome major clubs like Everton, Slovan Bratislava, and Red Star Belgrade on their way to a showdown with Ajax at Wembley.
The Dutch team proved too strong that night, but the result mattered little, as their mere presence in the marquee match of European football significantly raised the status and reputation of Greek football. Later that same year, PAO represented Europe in the Intercontinental Cup final against Nacional from Uruguay.
