Many fans have fond memories of Ousmane Soumah's goal against Halmstads: the striker scored a spectacular diving header in added time that enabled Sporting Club de Bastia to crown their superb Intertoto Cup run with the title of champion and a return to the UEFA Cup in the same 1997-98 season for a new continental adventure. 20 years after contesting the UEFA Cup final in 1978, Sporting Club de Bastia have succeeded in breaking into the top clubs of European soccer, a feat that has helped them to establish European soccer as an integral part of their identity. Pierre-Yves Andre kicked off the new UEFA Cup campaign by scoring the only decisive goal in the two-legged tie against Benfica. The Corsicans' hopes and dreams of another UEFA Cup fairytale unfortunately came to an end when Steaua Bucarest, against all expectations, beat Bastia on an away goal. Despite the bitterness of defeat, coach Frederic Antonetti and his team rekindled the European Cup flame in the hearts of the Turchini, who are still patiently awaiting their next chance to shine in Europe.
