The early 1990s were a turbulent time for Real Betis, plagued by financial problems and stuck in Spain's second division. Things began to look up in the 1993-94 season when, under Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, Betis finished second to Español by a point and were promoted to La Liga after a three-year absence. That team included a returning hero, veteran Rafael Gordillo, who played in midfield alongside young talent Juan Jose Cañas. The team also included such illustrious local players as Merino, Urena, Cuéllar and Marquez. To cap off a successful season, Betis also reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey after knocking out Barcelona on the way.
