After a successful first season in charge of FC Porto, which earned him a title in the Primeira Divisão, Artur Jorge continued where he left off in the 1985-86 season and organised a successful title defense. The reliable goal scorer Fernando Gomes contributed 20 in the League, although it was one of those rare seasons where he was not the top scorer in the division. The emerging Algerian striker Rabah Madjer played a big role and added a dozen more goals to Porto's cause. Hopes for success in the European Cup were narrowly ended by away goals from Barcelona, but great things in this area were just around the corner.
