Serbian coach Milorad Pavic was appointed Benfica coach this season after an impressive spell in Bilbao and he quickly handed the club their 21st title. With roughly the same squad as the previous season, Benfica were propelled to the title thanks to 24 goals from Moinhos and Nene, and only two defeats during the campaign. The Eagles fell three points behind FC Porto at mid-season, but they made a fine comeback in the spring before Dutch club PSV Eindhoven ended their progress in Europe in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
