The 1998-99 season brought the penta for FC Porto - a fifth consecutive Portuguese title and an 18th overall title for the club. Fernando Santos took over the reins at the start of the season and continued the momentum by finishing with a comfortable 8-point lead over neighboring Boavista. Mário Jardel's extraordinary goal-scoring exploits continued this season, his best to date at Porto, with 36 goals in just 32 league games, earning him the European Golden Boot. Slovenian attacking midfielder Zlatko Zahovic has also been a prolific scorer during this campaign.
