The most successful period in the history of Lille OSC took place early on, in the club's first decade of existence after its creation in 1944. Under Andre Cheuva, Lille enjoyed regular success in the French Cup and finished in the top two of Ligue 1, culminating in a golden period in the early and mid-1950s, with a league title in 1954 and French Cup wins in 1953 and 1955.Several of the club's greatest players played during this period, including defender Marceau Somerlinck, international midfielder Andre Strappe and prolific strikers such as Jean Baratte, Jean Lechantre, Gerard Bourbotte and Bolek Tempowski.
